“Scriptural Text: James 4:4 (NKJV)
“…know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
The focus of every believer ought to be growth in relationship with the Lord, from knowing the Lord to loving the Lord, to becoming a friend of God. This trajectory can however not be achieved when we do not know how to pursue friendship with God at the expense of the things of this world.
One cannot fully love the Lord and love something else equally because love means totally giving oneself to a thing or a course. Just as our opening text says, it is impossible to be a friend of this world and a friend of God at the same time. If you choose to be friends with God, then you must become an enemy to the world. In other words, you must cut off things that hinder our relationship with God.
Whatever competes for the time and worship that is due to the Lord is not worth keeping. When you therefore begin to find yourself giving too much attention to a thing more than you give to God, then it may be time to give that thing up, so that your undivided attention might be towards God.
Remember, only the Lord deserves to be worshipped with all your might, all your strength and all your heart; nothing else qualifies for that level of attention. Therefore, fight to ensure that nothing takes the time, resources, oblations or priority that you have separated for Him. Make the Lord your daily pursuit, and He will reveal Himself to you in a new way!

This is mind-blowing.
Striking a balance between our commitment to God as a friend and our daily responsibilities can be “very difficult.” As such I used to do everything else and whatever time left, I allotted to God. This is very wrong. It is like putting the cart before the horse. Recently, when I started to put God first and ask Him “Lord, please help me,” I realized that everything became easy. The Spirit now gives me ideas and speed so that projects that would normally take me a long time to accomplish now require much less time.
No controversy, friendship with God is PARAMOUNT. Putting the cart before the horse gets you nowhere! Submit yourself to the Lord and enjoy the blessings of being His friend!

I been going from a challenge couple of weeks. I felt lonely at time but I also felt loved by friends. However, today’s devotional really spoke to me as I realise as much as I read the bible and listen to messages I’m not actually talking to God about my problems. I may pray to him but never discuss my issues like I rant about it to my friends.

Because love requires whole self-giving to a thing or a course, one cannot fully love the Lord and another thing in the same way. Being a friend of God and the world at the same time is not conceivable. You must choose to hate the world if you want to be friends with God.
