“A good name is better than precious ointment”
Regardless of how promising a person, brand or organization may seem, certain factors may limit its growth and success. One of such factors is reputation.
The Cambridge Dictionary defines reputation as the opinion that people, in general, have about someone or something, or how much respect or admiration someone or something receives, based on past behaviour or character.
This means that as you interact or do business with people daily, you are presented with a unique opportunity to craft your own reputation. By your actions and disposition, you can consciously paint a picture of who you are in the hearts of those around you, which in turn determines whether or not they will trust you with their time or resources in the future.
Just like our opening text shows us, a good reputation is worth more than precious ointment and great possessions (Prov. 22:1). In other words, your reputation is a currency – a form of capital that you can bank on as you set your sight on success.
Furthemore, it is one thing to earn a good reputation, and another to keep or guard it. A man may get some attention for achieving a feat once, but it is consistency of results and character that establishes his reputation.
Therefore, have you earned the trust of others as being competent and dependable in your field? Build on that reputation by ensuring that you deliver the quality you have been known for each and every time. This is how to secure and maintain favour before men, and excel where others are failing.

My God, wish youth of today will read today’s devotion, especially those with the mindset of “I don’t owe anyone” so treat people anyhow. Some wonder why people don’t recommend or deal with them twice..

In this days and time where multinational companies sponsors youths to practice all manner of atrocities in a stark broad daylight the name of entertainment and give them attractive rewards that makes them spectacles that lures the rest into pursuing same demeaning career. Hallelujah, I love this devotional.
It started of making me think about what reputation I actually want to consciously craft in the hearts of people.I agreed with the devotional that I want a reputation that is good and allows me to be successful.
Then I thought, what is my own definition of a good character? According to the world, a good person is “tolerant” to sin and sinful ideologies. Whereas for me, a good reputation is a bold and righteous Christian who will not buckle under the pressure or conform to todays worldly standard of goodness.

Hmmm… interesting topic I must say! As a business person, it’s important how people perceive us hence, reviews are important tool to making more sales. Growing up, one thing I learnt from my dad and may his soul rest in peace is that he wasn’t rich, yet he commanded respect and honour from his reputation. A lot of people looked up to him. Yes, it has to be built. Reputation isn’t a gift of the spirit but a deliberate action from me to give people the idea of who I am.
How do I want to be seen? This isn’t a cunning action to manipulate and deceive but a perception that will carry one and continually be the way such a person will be seen.
This action is delibrate and conscious efforts have to be in place that will also be seen by all. Remember the reputation must be seen for people to accept that idea that that’s who you are. Just keep to it and people will buy it as far as you don’t flinch.

The Bible says a good name is better than precious ointments; no matter the prospects or the wealth or the riches, once a negative reputation is established about a person it all means nothing.
Like our prophet says, in every conversation or interactions we have with people or businesses, we are building our reputation and the result thereof determines how people would perceive us. Big organizations or brands were built on reputations before they gained their affluence. And they were serious and conscious enough to keep and maintain the reputation which is the reason for their large following.
I have learned today that whether big or small, our reputation is like our identity and should not be jeopardized by our carelessness. Nobody wants to get involved with a smeared name. Hmmm I become conscious of my identity from henceforth.
